Kislev: Notes on militarism vs. rebellion for Khanike 5783
Kislev is a month where we are called to bring our light into the darkness, however small the lights might be against the vastness of the darkening days.
The essay in the this months zine is focused on the 20th century reframe of Khanike (Yiddish transliteration of the word) to serve a nationalist project. The contemporary emphasis of the holiday often points to militarism and the might of the Maccabees. In their essay, Chava Shapiro offers a different and powerful example of how rebellions have recently shone bright lights into the darkness that we might carry with us into the Winter season.
The poster side features a quote from Rabbi Schnuer Zalman of Liadi, who authored the Tanya and founded the Chabad intellectual school of Chassidism.
Each zine folds out into a 11x17 poster.
This zine is risograph printed by Spina/Novoa in Tucson, AZ. The zine is on a single sheet of 11x17 French paper.
All poster proceeds go towards the Blacklidge Community Collective, the community space where the Jewish Zine Archive is housed.
